Julie Ross Dance Studio has been operating since 1986. The school has grown from having 50 students to over 200 students. It still offers the same high standards of teaching and many different styles of dance while still keeping up the current trends in dance. We are very proud of our reputation of providing a nurturing and positive environment where children and the dance enthusiasts can learn and be challenged by our very experienced and committed teachers.

Here are some of our excellent faculty:

Julie Ross (Principal) – Adult Tap & DanceFit

Julie moved from Melbourne to Coffs Harbour in 1980 after training at Dance Studios, studying at Rusden College and performing in Melbourne. She joined The Jazz Fitness team and with her husband Jon they opened a Jazz Fitness franchise in Taree/Foster. She returned to Coffs Harbour continuing instructing and joining a Jazz Fitness TV program. Julie has also taught fitness and rehabilitation classes at Baringa Hospital pool. She began her Dance School in 1986 as the sole teacher and as the studio has grown has been able to employ specialized teaching staff. She now oversees student and teacher training and teaches Adult Tap & Mat/Pilates Fitness & Stretch classes.

Ash Ross (Manager) – Jazz, Tap, Contemporary, Musical Theatre, JFH & Modern

Ashleigh was born in Coffs Harbour and moved to Brisbane at the age of 17 to start her career in dance. She completed her diploma in Commercial Dance & Music Theatre at DLDC, was a backup dancer for Countdown at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, performed at the Australian Fashion Design Awards and made the Sydney Opera House finals for Sydney Eisteddfod.

In 2010 Ashleigh moved to Florida USA where she worked on the Lion King Show at Disney World.

Since moving back to Australia Ashleigh taught at various dance studios in Brisbane and the Gold Coast and has now re-located herself back to Coffs Harbour where she is managing and a full time teacher at the Julie Ross Dance Studio.

Terri Maher – Ballet

Terri has a fellowship Qualification in the Cecchetti Method and hold the Certificate 1V in the teaching of Classical Ballet. Terri has studied and taught all forms of dance including : Classical, Tap, Jazz & Character/National. She operated her own Dance School from 1975 to 2007 in Ballarat Victoria, followed by freelance teaching in various schools around Australia. Terri has become an active member of the local theatre groups and recently performed in the musical Chicago as a dancer and actress.

Kate Sevenoaks – Ballet, Modern, Jazz, Contemporary

Kate grew up dancing and after completing her Advanced certificates in Tap and Jazz she moved overseas and professionally danced through London between 2005-2007, training at London’s “Pineapples” dance studio. She moved back home to Australia and continued her dance career in Cairns 2007-2010, performing for the NBA Taipans, Cairns Casino and Cairns Convention Centre performing in numerous Commercial and Show Girl productions. Kate has always had a passion for the Theatre and after moving back to Coffs Harbour has Choreographed and performed in numerous productions including: “Chicago”, “All Shook Up”, “Hairspray”, “Anything Goes” and “Chitty Chitty, Bang Bang”.

Kate teaches all styles of dance including Ballet, Jazz, Lyrical, Contemporary and Cabaret. Kate’s qualifications for teaching include an Associates certification with Cecchetti Ballet, she holds a qualified AcroDance certification with American based company AcrobaticArts and is currently training to obtain her Associate Diploma also with Cecchetti Ballet.

Sally Johnson – Tap
Kym Mackinnon – JFH, DanceFit

Kym trained with local teacher Louise Naveau for ballet and went on to train 2 years fulltime with David Atkins in Sydney. Kym has danced professionally on cruise liners, pantomimes in New Zealand, Cairns Casino, William Forsythe Productions and in Japan.

Michele Warman – Level 1 Tap/Jazz, Tiny Tots

Shell was born in Coffs Harbour and grew up dancing right here at JRDS. At 17 shell moved to Queensland where she taught tap and hip hop at an elite dance school on the Gold Coast. Shell then worked as a performer at movie world, before traveling around the world for 2 years. She returned to Australia in 2008 and opened her own, successful dance school in the Gold Coast Hinterland. With her son Bailey, shell has now moved home to be closer to her family and join the JRDS team
